October 2021 sees Dami Im finally releasing the album she’s waited her whole career to make.
Seizing creative control, MY REALITY is the first album where Dami has written or co-written every track.
“I’ve always wanted to make an album like this, ever since I started singing as a kid,” Dami says.
“A few years ago I wasn’t mature enough to steer my albums the way I wanted them to go. This is the dream album, it took a while but I’m so proud of it.”
After winning The X Factor in 2013, Dami has released four ARIA Top 10 albums and scored hits with Alive, Gladiator, Smile, Super Love and her Eurovision gamechanger Sound of Silence – scoring the highest placing of any Australian artist at the global music competition.
After signing with ABC Music in 2020, Dami has expanded her musical horizons with thrilling results.
MY REALITY’s collaborators range from One Above (Hilltop Hoods, Illy) to Andy Mak (Vera Blue, Tina Arena) to Konstantin Kersting (Tones And I, Spacey Jane).
Most of the songs were written during the pandemic, meeting collaborators over Zoom rather than face to face.
“I actually didn’t mind that, it was a more flexible way to work without having to fly everywhere,” Dami says.
“I could just focus on the writing, I recorded a lot of my vocals from home which I loved, because I could just keep doing them until I was really happy with them.”
Considered one of the country’s most gifted vocalists, MY REALITY also sees Dami push her voice in new directions.
Alone, written by folky Byron Bay muso Garrett Kato, showcases a tender tone to her voice.
“On this album I really enjoyed working with people whose work is different to what I normally do, and it makes you think about things differently.”
For those waiting for her trademark powerhouse vocals, Pray takes you directly to church.
“People know me for the range of my voice. People love hearing those high notes and the power behind the voice. I don't want to put that in every song, it gets tiring, you need light and shade.
“There's some softness in Alone. I don't want every song to be belting, but some songs call for that, like Pray, you're wanting to shout it out and express yourself, you're releasing all your feelings to the sky. That's why it's loud!”
With highly personal lyrics that touch on everything from depression to moving out of your childhood home, MY REALITY also sees Dami mature as a songwriter.
“It was a really cathartic album to make, I felt like I was reading my own memoir back when I looked at the lyrics. It was very therapeutic.
“As humans we all have this need to express ourselves and share our experiences. With all of the songs I’m hoping they speak to people on some level and that they’re relatable. Ultimately, I want people to feel heard and understood.
“This album is about owning who I am. You shouldn’t shy away from the things people like about you. But you are who you are. Some parts on this record people might expect, some others show how much I’ve changed. With this album I’m just trying to be authentic in the way I know it, that’s my reality.”
